MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech women’s soccer team defeated the Saint Leo Lions, 2-1, on Thursday night in the semifinal round of the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Tournament to advance to the championship on Sunday.


 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: Florida Tech (13-2-2, 8-1-1 SSC), Saint Leo (9-5-5, 4-3-2 SSC)

STATS OF THE MATCH:

  • Just four minutes into the match, Sara Batchadji used a second chance shot that beat Saint Leo’s keeper to put Tech on top 1-0.
  • The Panthers dominated possession over the next several minutes, putting up 12 shots over next 20 minutes and forcing the Lions’ keeper to make five saves.
  • In the 33rd minute, Savannah Oxley dumped a pass off to Nora Oldmark who took a shot at the goal from over 30 yards out. Her shot slipped past the keeper to give Tech a 2-0 lead.
  • Izzy Mohr looked to make it a 3-0 game late in the half, but her shot was scooped up by the Saint Leo keeper and the teams went into halftime with a score of 2-0.
  • Lauryn Wood tried to extend the Panthers lead seconds into the second period, but her shot was stopped by the keeper.
  • Tech continued to dominate possession until the 72nd minute when Mina Haggstrom took the first shot of the match for the Lions, but Kaitlin Sinkler was able to make the stop to preserve the 2-0 lead for the Panthers.
  • In the 77th minute, the Lions broke through with a goal from Arielle Jacus.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure on the Lions, getting four more shots off in the final few minutes, but the match ultimately ended with a score of 2-1.

 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Florida Tech moves to 12-13-3 all-time against Saint Leo.
  • This was the fourth meeting for the teams in the SSC Tournament, and the teams are now 2-2 in the tournament.
  • Nora Oldmark scored her first goal of the season in the match.
  • Sunday’s match will be the fourth consecutive season the Panthers have earned their way to the Championship match.
