In only eight lifetime starts, Dornoch was already approaching the two-million dollar mark in earnings with $1,752,275. Saturday’s win in the Haskell made it back-to-back Grade 1 victories and put him well over the two-million dollar mark. He earned a 103 Beyer and $600,000 for his effort. His record is now 9 5-2-0.
The race unfolded much like a repeat of the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes in June with Mindframe and Dornoch fighting it out down the stretch. Dornoch has proven he is a very game colt with a big heart. He does not like to lose.
The full brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage will attempt the hat trick if all goes well, as his next planned start is the Grade 1 $1.25 million dollar Travers at Saratoga on August 24th. His main competition may be a filly if trainer Kenny McPeek decides to run Thorpedo Anna against the boys. With six wins from seven lifetime starts, Thorpedo Anna won the Grade 1 $500,000 Coaching Club at Saratoga on Saturday about half an hour after Dornoch’s score at Monmouth. She received a 95 Beyer for her effort.
McPeek said he would look at the numbers and make a decision soon as to whether she runs against the fillies in the G1 Alabama or the Travers on August 24th. With an almost ten point Beyer discrepancy between Dornoch and Thorpedo Anna, I think the Travers could be a tough hill for her climb. Nevertheless, it would certainly make the race more interesting!
The Travers winner obviously gets the money and the trophy. Additionally each year, the canoe in the middle of the lake at the Saratoga track is also painted in the winning owner’s silks colors. This could be quite a challenge for the Dornoch entourage as there are multiple ownership entities, including the former baseball outfielder Jayson Werth.
When Mage won the 2023 Kentucky Derby, his and Dornoch’s sire, Good Magic, stood for a mere $50,000. His stud fee was increased to $125,000 in 2024 and I suspect after the stellar year Dornoch is having, it could reach $200,000 for 2025.
Next up is the Jim Dandy at Saratoga on July 27th for the three year old colts. Expect to finally see Fierceness return in this spot and take on the D. Wayne Lukas Preakness winner Seize The Grey and Chad Brown’s Kentucky Derby runner-up Sierra Leone.
