MOREHEAD, Ky. — Morehead State Basketball is becoming quite accustomed to winning wards from the Ohio Valley Conference. For the fourth time this season, graduate transfer Riley Minix has earned OVC Men’s Basketball Player and Newcomer of the Week, while newcomer Eddie Ricks III has been awarded Freshman of the Week for the second time in 2023-24.
Minix, from Vero Beach, Fla, by way of Southeastern (Fla.,), recorded a pair of 26-point performances to help MSU catapult back into first place in the OVC race. In a home win over UT Martin, Minix hit 11 shots for his 26 points and also added a career-high six assists with a steal. At USI, Minix scored 26 again, hitting a trio of three-pointers, to go along with two assists and two steals. On the week, he shot 56 percent overall, 91 percent from the free throw line and 43 percent from three-point range.
Minix is averaging 18.9 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per game and ranks among the top 50 in Division I in several other stats categories.
Ricks III, a native of Clarksville, Tenn., put together back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts for the first time in his career. Against UT Martin, he scored 15 points (season-high against league opponents) on 5-of-6 shooting and 2-of-3 three-pointers. He also added an assist and two steals. At USI, Ricks came off the bench for 11 points and three rebounds in 23 minutes. For the week, he hit 62 percent of his shots and 60 percent from three-point distance.
In his first college campaign, Ricks III puts in 7.6 points and grabs 5.6 rebounds per game.
