It is getting close to narrowing down the field of teams to meet in the State High School Championship games. There are now 4 teams left in each class after last nights chilly games. The temperatures across the state were cold to say the least.
Sports View America correctly picked 18 of the 24 games in last nights contest. That’s an astounding 75% accuracy. All but one of SVA’s picks to win a title are still alive after last nights game. One game that has sports fans up in arms this morning was the Lloyd Memorial playing at home against Breathitt County. Even though Lloyd Memorial was the slight favorite going in, Breathitt fans thought they were the better team.
Breathitt scored first to take a 6-0 lead. on the ensuing kickoff Lloyd Memorial would score but not without controversy. It appeared to some that L.M. player Zulager was down but the officials did not see it that way and allowed the score. From there it was back and forth on the scoreboard until Breathitt committed a fumble which L.M. turned into another score. L.M. would go in to halftime with a 22-19 lead.
The second half was much like the first with L.M. outscoring Breathitt by the score of 19-13 and giving them a 41-32 win and a regional championship. What upset the fans was the apparent lack of quality officiating and the amount of penalties on Breathitt County. Breathitt had 13 penalties to Lloyd Memorials 7. If you take away the disputed kickoff return in the first half, Breathitt still falls short 33-32. Penalties and the fumble proved to be Breathitt County’s undoing. The officiating crew was from the Louisville area so it appears they would have no connection to either team which is how the KHSAA designed the referee assignments.
