The Kenny Payne era at Louisville is off to a rough start as the Cardinals lost to Wright St 73-72 on a buzzer-beating jumper by Trey Calvin. UofL is now 0-2 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, with both loses coming by 1-point at home.
After getting off to a slow start Louisville gained the lead with about 9 minutes left in the first half, and did not trail again until the final shot by Calvin as time expired. Louisville was led by 6’3” Sr guard El Ellis who had a career high 29 points, and 6’9” Jr forward Jae’lyn Withers with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
After taking a 72-67 lead with 1:32 left in the game Louisville seemingly had things in control, but they would not score another point as their final 3 possessions resulted in 2 turnovers and a long 3-point attempt by Withers. When Wright St took control for their final possession with 8 seconds left the Cardinals had 2 fouls to give but elected to let Calvin dribble the time out and take the shot with no time remaining.
Next up for the Cardinals is a home game against Appalachian St on Monday.
