Lexington, KY 11-5-21
For the last exhibition game of the season the Kentucky Wildcats hosted Miles College. It was the last chance for the Cats to fine tune their performance before facing Duke in the season opener on Tuesday night. After the Kentucky Wesleyan game, Calipari wanted to see his guards stay in front of their opponent’s guards better and stop the drive to the basket. Tonight’s match-up were content to stay beyond the three-point line and shoot. The Golden Bears made their first 6 three pointers and ended the game shooting 15 for 30 from behind the arc.

The game opened with an easy score for UK on a layup off the opening tip by Tyty Washington, but Miles College backed the Cats into a corner after that going on an 8 to 0 run and taking the lead 16-7 with 15 minutes left in the first half. When it looked like Kentucky was about to take the lead the Golden Bears went another run 8 to 0 run extending their lead 25-16 midway through the first half. The rest of the half went back and forth, but Miles would not let loose of the lead. Kentucky’s only led after the opening basket and the Golden Bears took a 46-39 into the half.

The Wildcats played tighter defense to begin the second half and scored the first eight points of the half and finally regain the lead 47-46. The Cats stayed focused on defense for the rest of the game and wore the Golden Bears out. Kentucky only allowed two points in the first 9 minutes of the second half. The Cats continued their second half dominance and won the game 80 to 71.

Sahvir Wheeler and Tyty Washington led all scorers with 15 points each and Oscar Tshiebwe led in rebounding with 12 and led the team in the +/- category with 18. Wheeler’s defense was what sparked the Wildcats to play harder on the defensive end and led to easier scores on the offensive end.

It wasn’t a pretty win but perhaps Calipari can use this to motivate the team before they play Duke on Tuesday at 9:30 on Espn.
