The time has come once again that all of the Big Blue Nation starts anticipating in April. This year’s Big Blue Madness doesn’t just represent the beginning of the basketball season, but it also represents the first time in over a year that Rupp Arena is back at full capacity. After the terrible 9 and 16 record last season the Cat fans are ready to meet this new roster and get the season started.

The Women’s basketball team took the floor first which included a rappel from the from the rafters of Rupp by the Women’s Head Coach Kyra Elzy. They competed in a three-point competition to begin the night which was won by Harlan County’s own Blair Green whom beat out Rhyne Howard in the final round.

After a short scrimmage, which was won by the white team, it was time for the UK Cheerleading team.

The Men’s basketball team were the finale of the night and by the cheers of the crowd, Dontaie Allen is still the fan favorite. After Calipari was introduced, he gave his “State of the Big Blue Nation” speech where he praised the BBN and said he missed the roar of the crowd and how they give the team energy when they need it. He introduced the late Terrance Clark’s family and the crowd gave their condolences through cheers and applause.

The Wildcats first exhibition was the three-point competition and even though all of the players looked good shooting it, the winner was transfer guard CJ Fredrick. The slam duck contest is what everyone gets excited to see at BBM and after many electrifying dunks the winner was Jacob Toppin. Last on the agenda was the scrimmage which was won by the white team.

There is not much you can take away from Big Blue Madness in terms of getting a feel for how this team will compete in the upcoming season, however, you can tell there is more talent on this team than the past season. It is going to be hard to figure out who the starters are going to be because of how deep this team is.

The Blue/White game takes place next Friday Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
Hopefully we can see a more competitive scrimmage where we can better analyze the team.
