Apparently, there is some sort of curse on a Kentucky Derby winner with the initials M.S. Both Maximum Security and Medina Spirit crossed the finish line first in 2019 and 2021, respectively. However, Maximum Security was disqualified on the spot and Medina Spirit’s title is in question as we speak. Both situations cost me a lot of money…for very different reasons. 

 

I had both the trifecta and superfecta in the 2019 Kentucky Derby with Maximum Security as the winner. Country House at 50-1 was going to make those exotic wagers juicy. And no horse has EVER been taken down in that race for lane violations. So, I was counting my money!!! Not so fast. It’s been two years since that historic and highly controversial takedown, and I am still bitter. 

 

Fast forward to 2021 and Medina Spirit did NOT have the numbers to win the race. None of them. Not one. Second? Sure!! But nothing about that win added up. Consequently, the horse I wheeled finished fourth…not third…and my exotic wagers were gone. I was in a state of disbelief for several days. Well, until today. You see, my handicapping was correct. Unfortunately, that will not put one dollar in my wagering account. 

 

It’s time for these shenanigans to stop. Glad to see Churchill Downs take the appropriate immediate action. Hope Pimilco will choose the high road as well.
